Activities to support emotional literacy

The Thrive Assessment and Action Planning Tool includes dozens of simple activities that parents and carers can use alongside schools (and other care or learning settings) to supplement and enhance the approach.

These tried and tested ativities done repeatedly in the context of a loving relationship with a significant adult will support the development of neuronal pathways in the brain that contribute positively to healthy stress management systems, the capacity to self-soothe and regulate emotion and a strong senses of self worth.

Importantly, they will support a child's growing capacity to make sense of the world, to be able to think about feelings and sensations, to be able to think while having strong feelings and to be able to make choices about their behaviour: all essential skills for learning.

"The brain develops in a use-dependent manner...Children who don't get consistent, physical affection or the chance to build loving bonds simply don't receive the patterned, repetitive stimulation necessary to properly build the systems in the brain that connect reward, pleasure and human-to-human interactions." Perry and Szalavitz, 2008:86
